What is Gardasil?
Manufactured and marketed by Merck & Co, Gardasil is a vaccine used to prevent certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Specifically, Gardasil treats HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for approximately 70% of cervical cancers, and cause HPV-induced vaginal, penile and anal cancers. Gardasil is an injectable medication, and is only administered to women with the aforementioned conditions.
Gardasil Side Effects
Since Gardasil was approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, over 25 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed in the U.S. Unfortunately, there have also been at least 14,072 injuries associated with Gardasil (93% of which were considered to be non-serious, and 7% classified as serious). Additionally, Gardasil has been linked to nearly 50 deaths.
Serious Gardasil side effects may include:
- Pain and swelling at the injection site (the arm),
- Nausea and fever
- Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)
- Blood Clot
- Bells Palsy
- Birth Defects
Gardasil Deaths Reported
Among the deaths linked to Gardasil:
- a 17-year-old girl in New York collapsed and passed away as the result of a suspected heart problem just 2 days after receiving the vaccine;
- an 11-year-old girl died from a heart attack 3 days after a Gardasil shot, and
- a 12-year-old girl with no prior medical problems died in her sleep 3 weeks after being injected with Gardasil.
Gardasil & the FDA
Soon after Gardasil was released in 2006, public concerns over the vaccine’s side effects began being raised. In response, the FDA reviewed available information and concluded that Gardasil was safe and should remain on the market. Gardasil labels do not currently contain an FDA-mandated ‘black box warning’ regarding the potentially fatal health complications linked to the vaccine. Therefore, women who suffered serious injuries or died after being administered the drug may have grounds to file a Gardasil lawsuit.
